"Postal Pete"

There is a real strange story behind this 1969 Kalmar....

It (and a few others) was purchased by the Canadian Postal System in Ottawa as a test vehicle. This Kalmar was used daily between the main Post Office and Parliament Building until the motor blew up.
It was sold to a local who began to (attempted is more likely) to convert it to Electric drive but never succeeded. It sat for many many years until it was offered to me last month because the owner lost his storage space.

All the parts are there and the truck is complete...

Looking forward to getting this Kalmar to Vermont very very soon because I have plenty of spare motors.

Lite fler bilder:

I had a chance to check out the Builder's Plate on the Firewall. "Pete's" Chassis # is 50138 (less than 3,000 were built) so I am guessing this is production number 138. This was sort of confirmed by the Type ID on the plate..."Pete" is a 4402-10 KVD-440 which makes him a first Generation Kalmar. I beleive (but will confirm) that this is a 1969.

After changing a few tires and beating on the Brake drums to free them up "Pete" was rolled into the Museum where he got a little cleaning and some work...

The Canadian Post had fabricated three Fiberglass boxes with lids (I guess to hold Mail) which had been installed in place of the regular seats...very unique. I'll keep two of the boxes (one in the front & one in the rear parcel section) mounted for now.

Yes, I am the owner of this KVD-440 Kalmar (serial number 50138). I don't speak or read swedish...I am sorry for that...but do speak Dutch and English.

I hope my Google translator will work so that I can begin to read some of the posts here. Thank You Fredrik for posting my photos. :)

;) Bedankt voor de link Ronny ;) Now I speak fluent Swedish....LOL
